In 2002 representatives from the RTA Southern Region, Camden and Goulburn Police Local Area Commands plus Goulburn, Wingecarribee and Wollondilly Councils met to discuss ways to reduce the number of crashes and casualties occurring on both local and state roads across the three local government areas.

As the Hume Highway was common to all LGA’s the decision was made to name the group the Upper Hume Road Safety Partnership.

A 3-year Action Plan of joint initiatives for the period 2002 to 2005 was prepared and on 3 June 2002 an inaugural signing of a Partnership Agreement between all stakeholders took place.

Since the signing a number of innovative projects have been completed including:

• ‘Memorandum of Understanding for Crash Reporting’ between Police and Councils;

• ‘Stay Fresh on the Hume’ driver fatigue program including a rest area map highlighting facilities and features; and

• ‘Motorcycling the Southern Way’ guide for recreational riders incorporating road safety and tourist information.

The Upper Hume Partnership group evaluated the success and achievements of the 2002-2005 plan and developed a new plan for the period 2006 to 2010.

This new plan continues to address the major road safety issues common to all Upper Hume stakeholders with a particular emphasis on light trucks and motorcycle safety. The group successfully secured $30,000 in funding to implement projects in these two key areas during the 2005/2006 financial year.
